Georg Simmel was the first great figure in sociology’s classical tradition to set out a distinctive conception of society not as a supra-individual structure but as a series of enabling and constraining interactions and associations among human beings. Simmel is one of the first sociologists who sought to secure grounds for the new discipline of sociology without having recourse to the then — and often subsequently — seemingly unproblematical answer: sociology is the study of society. 2011, Pocket/Paperback.
