Perinatal asphyxia is caused by a lack of oxygen to organ systems due to a hypoxic or ischemic insult that occurs within close temporal proximity to labor (peripartum) and delivery (intrapartum). In the neonate, the lack of oxygen may lead to multi-organ failure with brain involvement as the major organ of concern (hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy [HIE]).

Data from hospital-based studies in such settings suggest an incidence of 5-10/1000 live births. Methods and outcomes: We conducted a systematic review and aimed to answer the following clinical question: What are the effects of interventions in Perinatal asphyxia is defined as a condition leading to progressive hypoxemia, hypercapnia, and metabolic acidosis with multiorgan failure, including the kidney. The pathogenesis of the hypoxia-induced vasomotor nephropathy has been studied in newborn rabbits and lambs. Asphyxia (as-FIX-ee-uh) means lack of oxygen and blood flow to the brain.

Causes and effects of perinatal asphyxia. In mature infants, severe perinatal HIE can cause the cortex and white matter to melt away to such an extent that the brain is reduced to a thin walled sac, similar to hydranencephaly.

During birth, asphyxia occurs when the child suffers a combination of oxygen deficiency and reduced blood supply. In serious cases of asphyxia, the infant can develop symptoms of brain damage shortly following birth, ie, hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE).

Forty term (≥37 weeks of gestation) neonates with severe perinatal asphyxia were studied in a prospective, longitudinal, placebo-controlled trial.
