Winemaker Denis Malbec, who was born at Bordeaux's Château Latour but made California his home, helping launch Sonoma's Captûre Wines and consulting for several Napa estates, died Saturday in an early-morning car crash in Napa Valley. He was 46. Malbec was driving in Yountville at about 1 a.m. when the car left the road. Born in Pauillac, Denis Malbec studied viticulture and oenology in Bordeaux and Champagne before joining the team at Château Latour, following in the footsteps of his grandfather Camille and father Jean-Noel.
